One Yard Wonder

Before I get into my entry for the Pattern Review One Yard Wonder contest, allow me to introduce my son: the closer of all open doors, non vegetable eater and giver of the sweetest kisses, Jr. Jr.

I am always up for a sewing challenge. The One Yard Wonder was logical because I had plans to make something for my son for the winter. I decided on M6873 from McCall’s because I liked the faux welts on the vest and the cuffs on the pants. I also made the bowtie from Simplicity 1206 (not reviewed) with some scraps.

While helping my mother clean out her sewing room a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon this nice grey suiting. It was only one yard, so I knew right away I would sew something for one of the kids.

Pattern Description:  M6873 Infants’ Vest, Shirts, Shorts, Pants, Tie and Pocket Square

Pattern Sizing: I cut the size M for views A, E and G

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I was drawn to this pattern because I like the faux welts and the cuffs in the pants. I didn’t like that I had to alter the pants by 3 inches in the inseam because the crotch area sagged horribly. I understand the need for diaper space, but my poor pants looked like baby harems. Yikes!

Fabric Used: Wool blend suiting and black lining fabric, satin for bow tie and pocket square

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes. I would sew it again and I would recommend to others.

Conclusion: I’m glad I sewed this in a Medium because now I know that a Medium is the smallest size vest I can make without having issues sewing the sides together. I’m also impressed that I was able to sew up this entire outfit with less than one yard!

This was really fun to make. I look forward to sewing another one soon, as my son has a growing belly. Kids grow so fast, but I know this outfit will be passed down to at least two more boys.

I also created a casual look by rolling up his sleeves and pairing his vest with jeans and Jordans.

Just a few more pictures. Can I take a moment and give a huge shout out to photographers that photograph children? They are the real MVPs. My son was not difficult to photograph, but he kept watching the cars passing by.
